PARVO

Canine Parvovirus is a highly contagious and potentially fatal virus that affects puppies, especially before they are fully vaccinated.

It spreads easily through contaminated surfaces, soil, and even on shoes or hands.

Puppies are not fully protected until 2 weeks after their final vaccine (typically around 16–18 weeks old).

Where NOT to Take Your Puppy

Avoid all high-risk areas where unknown dogs may have been:

Dog parks

Pet stores (unless carried)

Rest stops

Sidewalks in busy areas

Apartment complex potty areas

Boarding facilities or groomers

If you must go out: Carry your puppy or use a stroller.

Safe Places & Activities

Low-risk options to safely socialize your puppy:

Your own yard (if no unknown dogs have access)

Homes of trusted friends/family with vaccinated dogs

Puppy playdates with fully vaccinated, healthy dogs only

Car rides (no ground contact)

Training at home

Protecting Your Home Environment Parvo can be brought inside—even without direct dog contact.

Remove shoes or use a designated indoor pair

Wash hands before handling your puppy

Clean surfaces if exposed to high-traffic dog areas

Use an enzymatic cleaner for accidents

Potty Training Safely Use: Puppy pads A designated safe potty area

Avoid shared outdoor potty spots

Stick to a routine to build good habits while staying safe

Vaccination Timeline (Typical)

6–8 weeks: First vaccine

10–12 weeks: Booster

14–16 weeks: Final vaccine

Full protection = 2 weeks after last shot

Always follow your vet’s specific schedule.

Signs of Parvo (Seek Vet Care Immediately)

Lethargy (very low energy)

Loss of appetite

Vomiting

Severe diarrhea (often bloody)

Fever Parvo progresses quickly—early treatment is critical.

The restrictions can feel limiting, but they are temporary and critical to your puppy’s safety. A few careful weeks now help ensure a healthy, happy future.
